How Studio Works
Studio works exclusively in visual arts education: drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and media technology.
Professional Artists Teach Students
STUDIO’s professional artists model a way of thinking and working. Combining special skills working with children, deep knowledge of art history, media, and technical expertise, Studio’s artists encourage students to engage in a process of exploration and discovery.
Comprehensive Visual Arts Programming
STUDIO artists work directly with students, teachers and administrators for up to five years, establishing art as a regular part of the school’s curriculum. Studio and the partner site make a commitment to provide funding.
Collaboration
STUDIO plans collaboratively with the school team to ensure a successful program. Studio integrates school-wide themes and curriculum connections into its program.
Professional Development
STUDIO conducts professional development programs that introduce classroom teachers to The Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Visual Arts, demonstrating how the strands: Art making, Developing Art Literacy, Making Connections through Visual Arts, Community and Cultural Resources, and Exploring Careers and Lifelong Learning relate to the school’s curriculum goals. Teachers become familiar with art materials and techniques, encouraging them to bring art making into their classrooms.
Student Learning
STUDIO artists deliver lessons that are age-appropriate and focus on developing imagination, expression, technical and observation skills. Students engage in peer discussions and ongoing reflection.
Parent Participation
STUDIO provides parent engagement workshops. Parents become familiar with the materials and techniques that children explore in class. They recognize the importance of art making in child development and learn how to share the experience at home.
Assessment
STUDIO conducts regular assessments to ensure that goals are being met.
Exhibition
STUDIO designs and installs an on-site exhibition of student work. The culminating display is also a school community celebration.
