Studio in a School NYC, LLC seeks practicing visual artists, preferably with experience teaching young people, for part-time contractual teaching positions in public schools, early education centers, and other community based organizations throughout New York City.
Artist Instructors will join a team of over 100 dedicated professionals responsible for providing high quality, sequential visual arts instruction in drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, digital media and sculpture. Artist Instructors develop unit plans, implement existing curriculum, and collaborate with classroom teachers to lead art lessons at sites in all five boroughs of the City. Artists may work in multiple programs, for a total of one to four days per week, throughout the academic school year and report to the respective program’s manager. Goals, responsibilities, and duration of teaching assignments vary by program.
Approximately 85% of an Artist Instructor’s time will be spent onsite leading instruction with students and partner teachers, planning with teachers and school staff, conducting teacher-training workshops, and displaying artwork. Approximately 15% will be dedicated to writing curriculum, record keeping, documenting, reporting, assessing student and program results, communications, and ordering supplies.
New Artist Instructors are required to attend new Artist training for approximately two weeks beginning in mid-September, as well as ongoing training throughout the school year. All Artists are expected to attend program-specific meetings and trainings throughout the year as well.
Requirements for Employment as an Artist Instructor:
- Active professional visual art practice with an exhibition history
- Foundational skills in painting, drawing, and sculpture required
- Interest in teaching a range of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, printmaking, 2-D graphic design, and digital media
- Demonstrated ability to teach children and/or teenagers in a school or community setting preferred; some relevant teaching experience required
- Ability to collaborate and work with a range of diverse partners and stakeholders, including teachers, administrators, and parents
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Interest in and capacity to write sequenced instructional plans
- Interest in participating in training in pedagogy and Studio’s methodology
- Availability to work at least two days per week; school day availability preferred, though after-school teaching opportunities are available
- Prior to the first day of teaching, background check and fingerprinting with the
New York City Department of Education will be required
