Where Creative Engagement is A Child’s Path to Healthy Eating

Encouraging children to make healthier eating decisions has become a key topic in our national conversation. As a response to this issue, Studio launched Art & Healthy Living. The program combines six visual art workshops led by Studio’s artists/instructors, with three nutrition lessons delivered by educators trained by Teachers College, Columbia University.

Since its creation, Art & Healthy Living has reached more than 20,000 third- through fifth-grade students in New York City’s public schools. All these students have learned to observe fruits and vegetables with artists’ eyes, and tasted the fresh produce.

  • In art workshops, students closely observe and investigate local produce. They hone their art-making skills – drawing, printmaking, collage – and learn to think imaginatively.
  • Students discover that carrots can be orange or white, are in the family of vegetables called taproots, and contain vitamin A to help us see, and antioxidants to keep us healthy.

Art & Healthy Living also provides professional development for teachers and administrators in participating schools, enabling them to continue using the visual arts and nutrition instruction to improve their student’s health eating habits.
