Arts Intern Alumni Chat with Kasssandra Gonzalez

Kasssandra talks about their Arts Intern experience at The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Brooklyn Museum.

" This internship highlighted my appreciation for cultural organizations and their importance for our community. It is a place to bring people together from all backgrounds through diverse arts and cultural programming. Lastly, it opened my eyes to various museum career paths I had not previously considered, such as digital curation and archival documentation. "

Gain paid experience teaching and mentoring high school students in the visual arts.

Since 2009, Mentors have supported TAP teens from New York City Public Schools as they teach visual art to elementary age students in summer camps.

The Mentor position is a paid opportunity for BFA majors that provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience working with high school students ages 16—18. The Mentor is responsible for administering key aspects of TAP, submitting daily updates and documentation, as required.

DETAILS

The Teen Apprenticeship Program consists of two parts. During the spring, teens train as an apprentice with a Studio Institute artist instructor during weekly meetings held on Saturdays, where they learn the fundamentals of art making, as well as how to plan and lead classes for young learners. TAP Mentors shadow artists to learn effective art instruction and lesson-plan writing—and how to facilitate and engage high school students in discussions about arts learning.

During the summer, TAP Mentors work with artist instructors to guide teens as they produce, document, and deliver art instruction to young children at New York City summer camps. Mentors support the teens by guiding them in lesson planning, giving feedback, and observing and co-teaching onsite art classes.

EARN A COMPETITIVE WAGE

Mentors earn $22.50 per hour working up to 25 hours a week.
