Envisioning Landscapes

PAST EXHIBITION – The Studio in a School Gallery

November 14, 2023 – January 19, 2024

Studio in a School NYC is proud to present Envisioning Landscapes: New York City and Beyond, an exhibition curated from our archive of student artworks.

New York City is a perennial source of inspiration, looming large in our students’ imaginations. With the support of Studio artist instructors, students learn to carefully observe their surroundings and reflect on their relationship with the city. The resulting artworks express the curiosity, excitement, and awe children feel towards the city they call home.

Studying landscapes also allows young people to learn about the world beyond the city, explore nature’s wonders, and imagine life in faraway places. Through creating landscapes, students examine the factors that shape our world: agriculture, weather, habitats, architecture, transportation, and community. Art becomes a way of seeing how these pieces of the world fit together—and how the world might be reshaped for the better.

The artworks on view were pulled from Studio’s archive, which began in 1980 to preserve and document exemplary works created by students in our programs. Dating from 1986 to 2012, the drawings, paintings, collages, and prints exemplify our enduring commitment to arts education. Today, our archive holds nearly 2,000 pieces used for exhibitions, training, and scholarship. We continue to build this archive through digital reproductions with the goal of supporting arts education and delighting viewers for years to come.
