Studio in a School NYC is pleased to present A Studio in Your School: Artworks from Studio’s Long Term Partnership Sites, an exhibition celebrating the extraordinary artistic achievements of students participating in Studio’s Long Term Program in grades Pre-K–8. Studio engages children and teens from preschool through 12th grade at New York City public schools and community-based organizations in all five boroughs. Working with Studio artist instructors in collaboration with their teachers, students observe, imagine, and interpret the people, places, and things that make up their lives.

Studio’s original program, the Long Term Partnership Program (LTPP), establishes an artmaking and arts learning studio in our partnership sites. The Art Studio becomes a place for the entire community develop creatively. Throughout the LTPP, student artists are engaged in rigorous sequential instruction that builds from year to year and grade to grade, providing a comprehensive arts education which enables students to experiment with a range of artistic techniques, including collage, drawing, printmaking, design, animation, sculpture and painting.

Students in LTPP receive comprehensive visual arts experiences that encourage them to develop the Artist Habits of Mind, which include the ability to stretch, explore, persist, envision, observe, and reflect. Students learn to observe the world closely, develop their imaginations, and reflect on what they and their peers create. They build academic and domain-specific vocabulary while talking about art, asking, and answering questions, and describing their choices and intentions. Both the hands-on artmaking and the dialogue with classmates supports social and emotional learning. Ultimately, this approach prioritizes collaboration as we foster strong partnerships with school administrators, teachers, and partners, and offer professional learning for teachers and workshops for families.

An eclectic body of work, A Studio in Your School encapsulates the nature of the LTPP, which emphasizes the unique perspectives and experiences of each child. Students in the program explore artistic inspiration—observation, memory, and imagination—to create personally meaningful work. Each piece of artwork expresses a child’s unique ideas, choices, and solutions.

We are grateful to our artist instructors for their hard work and dedication. We are equally appreciative of the schools and communities that have embraced our programs, as well as the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA), for their generous financial support.
