PAST EXHIBITION – The Studio in a School Gallery

February 29, 2024 – April 5, 2024

Studio Institute is proud to present Artists Rising 2024: Visions from the Teen Studio. This exhibition comprises the work of young artists from New York City public high schools, who participated in our Studio Intensives, a series of free Saturday and after-school art workshops, taught by professional artists. These workshops provide a point of convergence, where teens from across the city create art and share artworks. Led by Studio artist instructors and our Teen Programs staff, the classes provide individual guidance and support teens’ college goals and interests.

The Portfolio Development Intensive develops the observational drawing skills needed for admission to art colleges. Working with live models providing short and long poses, the teens created charcoal figure drawings, included in this exhibition. These young artists also developed their oil pastel techniques by creating self-portraits. The pastel drawings on display demonstrate the teens’ personal artistic choices: blending colors and exploring visual texture to best capture their unique self-portraits.

In the Painting Intensive, teens produced rich dimensional acrylic paintings featuring snippets of their personal lives—from still life objects to portraits to cityscapes—utilizing advanced painting techniques, such as creating paint layers, color mixing, and managing paint palettes. Teens explored portraiture by painting themselves or important people in their lives, including family members and friends.

During the Figure in Motion Intensive, teen artists developed their drawing skills to capture the human figure in motion, using charcoal and graphite pencils to sketch live models in dynamic timed poses. In collaboration with the New York City Ballet, teens met the artist in residence David Michalek, attended a live ballet performance, and sketched dancers in rehearsal. By the end of the workshop, teens learned to leverage mark making to fully represent movement and rhythm.

Congratulations to the teen artists, their families, and schoolteachers. We are honored to share these portfolio-ready artworks by our rising young artists.
