Studio Institute’s Studio Intensives are under way! Twenty-six high school students have begun the process of strengthening their portfolios in this year’s Portfolio Development class.
Under the guidance of experienced college professor and Studio Artist Instructor Jamie Powell, the public high school juniors and seniors from across the city who participate in the seven-week-long program will enhance their portfolios and sharpen their technical drawing skills. The Portfolio Development students first review their portfolios with Powell and develop action plans to improve their bodies of work and subsequent skills. They then spend their Saturdays working with pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, and oil pastels to refine their skills through drawing still lifes and live models.
With the future of art school and college applications looming large in the distance, the Intensives series is designed to not only bolster each student’s portfolio, but also guide them through the college application process. On select Tuesdays, students gather at Studio Institute after school to learn about everything from the Common App to securing Financial Aid, while creating lists of target colleges and perfecting application essays. Students also journey beyond the classroom for campus tours of the Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.), The New School, and Pratt Institute, chaperoned by Studio Institute staff.
Other classes in the Studio Intensives series include Painting, on Saturdays starting in the winter, as well as an afterschool Multi-Media Intensive in partnership with the New York City Ballet. Read more about that program in a future newsletter!
