The members of the Studio in a School Association Board of Directors and staff mourn the passing of our friend and Board Member Tony Bechara. Tony, a prominent artist, was an early champion of Studio in a School, joining the board in 1988. His decades of service included working with artists for our Print Club and most recently he was the guest judge for P.S. Art, an annual exhibition celebrating the outstanding achievements in the visual arts by New York City public school students.
Tom Cahill, President of Studio Institute, said, “I feel so fortunate to have worked with Tony for so many years. He leaves a legacy of support for both artists, arts education, access and career development programs for young people. He will be deeply missed.”
Agnes Gund, the Founder of Studio in a School, shared, “Tony had a rare magnetism—equal parts intellect, charm, and conviction. His geometric abstractions were rigorous, radiant, and deeply personal. But beyond the studio, Tony’s generosity defined him. He was a tireless advocate for artists, most notably Carmen Herrera. Long before the world caught on, Tony recognized her brilliance and made it his mission to ensure she was seen. That kind of loyalty—and vision—is rare. Tony gave his time, his voice, and his belief to others. He didn’t just make art; he made things happen. And he did it all with style, wit, and an enormous heart. He was a significant figure in the cultural community, serving as the Board President of El Museo del Barrio for fifteen years, playing a pivotal role in its development. We’ve lost a singular presence who was a true friend and unflagging supporter and Board member for Studio in a School. His impact will be felt for generations.”
Hasna Muhammad, Board Chair, expressed sincere appreciation for Tony’s lengthy commitment to Studio and extends condolences to Tony’s family and loved ones on behalf of the Board.
In addition to Studio in a School and El Museo del Barrio, Tony was a trustee of both the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Brooklyn Rail.
