The Studio Arts Mentor program is a paid internship for undergraduate Studio Art majors, which provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience teaching and supervising others. There is a strict Financial Aid Qualification for this program: students should have filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the most recent academic year. Their Student Aid Report (SAR) must indicate an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $10,000 or less.
Interns will assist an experienced teaching artist by helping coordinate an apprenticeship program for high school students who are learning to teach visual art to children in New York City camps. Interns serve as mentors to the high school students as well as co-teach art classes. Arts Mentors will be the eyes and ears in the field and help administer the program by identifying problems as they arise, submit daily updates, and document the program’s success. By providing guidance and support, interns serve as role models to the high school students, therefore must be professional and maintain high standards of personal conduct.

- The Studio Arts Mentors program will run from Monday, July 9, 2019 to Friday, August 16, 2019
- Interns earn $17/hour
- 35 hour work week
- July 8 – Mentors begin 5-day intensive training to prepare them for their supervisory and teaching assignments.
- Mid July – Mentors begin their oversight responsibilities of the high school students at camps located in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan. (Start dates vary by camp)
- The program will include intensive studio art instruction, possible field trips to local art schools and/or museums, and practice teaching sessions.
Responsibilities will include:
- Mentoring high school art instructors
- Teaching art classes at summer camps
- Supervising site visits to camps in Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan
- Assist the artist by preparing materials and modeling clean up procedures for students
- Administrative reports and record keeping (ex. student observations, weekly timesheet approvals)
- Documenting the program through online blog posts & photography
- Completing a written final report
Applicants must be:
- A declared Studio Art major or BFA student
- A full time undergraduate student, currently a sophomore or junior
- Eligible to work in the United States without a Visa
- Residents of New York City or currently attending a school in New York City.
Financial Aid Qualification: Students should have filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the most recent academic year. Their Student Aid Report (SAR) must indicate an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $10,000 or less. Candidates will submit their SAR as a PDF document along with their cover letter, resume, and transcript. Students who do not meet this qualification will not be considered for an interview.
